Can’t get rid of Fleas?
Fleas are notoriously hard for home owners to treat themselves - often spending more in DIY products over a long period of time with little or no results. This is due to a variety of reasons including the life cycle of the flea, poor quality treatment products and lack of knowledge.
Fleas are small (2mm) insects, flattened side to side and reddish-brown in colour. The flea has legs that enable it to jump up to 8 – 10 inches high and is parasitic on warm-blooded animals. They can feed on skin, feathers and the blood-rich faeces of other adult fleas. The adults detect vibrations caused by potential hosts, then emerge to jump to the host.
The complete lifecycle of the flea is only four weeks in the summer months. Adult fleas feed on blood. Their bites can cause intense irritation around a central bright red spot. Different people react differently to a bite, both in terms of degree of reaction and time taken to react – hence the need for flea pest control and flea treatment services.
The most common species in the UK which bites humans is the “Cat Flea”. The Human Flea, Bird Flea and less common Dog Flea are next in magnitude.
It’s best to treat infested pets with a special veterinary aerosol, powder or shampoo. Burn any infested bedding and consider removing and destroying any old birds’ nests you find the eaves or attic.
Bedbugs on the increase in the UK!
Bedbugs on the increase in the UK!
Bedbugs spread very quickly and easily and are also difficult to treat. This has caused an upsurge in the number of bedbug outbreaks in the UK.
Adult bedbugs are approx 5mm long and are usually found in bedrooms (hence being called Bedbugs) but also hide in cracks and crevices during the day. They are nocturnal and attracted to both the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide in our breath. The most common shelters for bedbugs are in the seams of mattresses, in crevices in the bed frame, behind furniture surrounding the bed (especially the headboard) or where the wall meets the floor. Before feeding they are a flattened oval shape and light brown, but become rounder and darker after feeding.
An established infestation will also be associated with an unpleasant scent secreted by bed bugs.
Bed bugs are one of the most difficult insect pests to eradicate. Deep cleaning, exceptional hygiene and the use of insecticides will help to keep bedbug numbers under control; however professional bed bug treatments will be required to eradicate the infestation.
At the beginning of a bed bug infestation bites may not feel itchy, making the situation difficult to read. However, small droplets of blood on the sheets will definitely indicate the presence of bed bugs.
